Understanding Neurodiversity

Everyone’s brain is different which is an incredible asset in the workplace. Having a group of people who have a range of skills sets, are able to see situations from different perspectives and approach problems in different ways allows you to have an innovative, effective and inspirational workforce.

However sadly people who are neurodiverse can find workplaces inaccessible and this prevents many people engaging in work or reachingthier true potential. Needless to say this is a huge lost opportunity for businesses. At The Core Collective we are on a mission to change this. As psychologists we are uniquely able to equip your employees with knowledge and skills to reach their potential and train your leadership team to embrace neurodiversity to create an inclusive culture in which people thrive.

We have created a series of training sessions to explore a range of key areas relating to neurodiversity. We have also created a Neurodiversity Strategy for businesses who want to reach beyond training to truly harness the opportunities of neurodiversity within their team. Contact us to find out more!

Neurodiversity: an introduction

It is a common myth that there is a “right way” for our brains to function or such a thing as a “normal brain”. In fact, everybody’s brains are unique, and we all exist on a spectrum in terms of the way we understand and interact with the world. This is neurodiversity. Being aware of neurodiversity in relation to both ourselves and others can improve communication, connection and wellbeing.

This training session aims to

•Provide an overview of the concept of neurodiversity

•Explore the strengths and difficulties that come from living or working in a neurodiverse community

•Consider ways of optimizing accessibility and inclusivity in our everyday interactions.

Neuro diversity: harnessing the advantages that diverse brains bring to a team

Working within a diverse team brings huge advantages, it creates a valuable mix of skills and abilities as well as connecting with a range of perspectives. However historically some neurodiverse communities have not felt included within the workplace. When differences are not considered they can also lead to difficulties particularly relating to communication and assumptions in the workplace. In this training we explore the spectrum of needs and abilities and consider how to use a knowledge of neurodiversity to optimize team working.

This training supports attendees to:

•Consider the strengths that neurodiversity can bring to the workplace

•Understand how to harness the strength of a neuro diverse team

•Explore the difficulties that can naturally arise from difference and consider how to manage these within a team

Neurodiversity: creating an accessible work environment

It is estimated that at least 20% of the general population are neurodiverse, however, 80% of neurodiverse people are not engaged in employment. This is a significant loss not only for the person but also to businesses missing out on significant opportunities for talent acquisition and innovation. Many factors that prevent neurodiverse people from entering and remaining in the workplace can be easily overcome allowing more inclusive, productive and innovative workplaces.

Learning outcomes:

•Discuss the factors that create barriers to neurodiverse people entering and remaining in the workplace

•Consider how to create an inclusive working environment by exploring interpersonal approaches

•Explore ways of making the working environment and procedural norms accessible to all.

Neurodiversity: adapting wellbeing approaches to support diverse brains

We all have different needs, perspectives, skills and abilities that make us truly unique so when thinking about wellbeing strategies it is important to make our approach as individual as the person using them! Traditionally people from neurodiverse backgrounds can struggle to access wellbeing support that works for them, feeling that they do not fit within the prescribed box. In this session we explore how to create a wellbeing approach that is tailored to your unique needs and take into account neurodiversity, skills and interests.

Learning outcomes:

•Contemplate what wellbeing looks like and means for you

•Explore different approaches to wellbeing and positive mental health

•Consider how to use a knowledge of neurodiversity to adapt and tailor wellbeing approaches to maximize effectiveness
